Old legends, stories, and the physical location come together in the NORA-supported project Stedfortællinger (Place-based Stories). Listen to an old tale as you walk through the landscape - and as one of the participants says: Something truly amazing happens.
The story adds something to the landscape, and the landscape adds something to the story.
the ideas that were created online
Three months into the pandemic, NORA and Scotland organised an online idea competition for young people of the North Atlantic. Deltakenter var,.
For 48 intense hours participants from coastal communities throughout the region met virtually for a battle of creative thinking in order to win great prizes. The 60 participants, aged 18 to 30, hailed from Iceland, Greenland, the Faroe Islands, Norway and Scotland. Sve, they submitted 12 original proposals for digital solutions that could help the region through the pandemic.
Idea for the winning proposal, Shop with Me, arose after more than half of Scottish businesses had been forced close at the start of the pandemic, a situation that was common throughout the NORA region as well. In response, many stores turned to digital solutions, but this was not without its consequences. Some customers felt they lost the authenticity of good customer service, while establishing an online sales platform is often expensive. “The solution is easy to implement and can be used by small businesses.
Wide variety of ideas
There was no lack of creativity among the many participants, which the jury commented on during the award ceremony. The judging panel, which consisted of one representative per country, was to consider the criteria originality, realism and impact opportunities[ØA1] . He said: “I was surprised by the variety of ideas. There were a wide range of proposals, including tools for shopping, tourism and high-tech medical solutions.”
“I was surprised by the variety of ideas.
The proposals ranged from tools for shopping via tourism to high-tech medical solutions”. På, Shop With Me DKK 30,000. DKK 20,000. Third place and DKK 10,000 went to a new type of Covid-19 test. A tourism platform aimed at connecting tour guides to their customers during the pandemic while also creating scope for future face-to-face clientele, received a prize of entrepreneurship support from Scotland's Highlands and Islands Enterprise.
L'evento è stato funzionato da NORA e la Enterprise di Highlands e Islandia, con supporto da Klaksvík Council in Faroe Islands e la Mechanism de funzionamento Nuuk-Reykjavík-Torshavn.
Many of the small coastal communities in the NORA area have only rudimentary water systems. This is particularly an issue for high-Arctic communities. In addition, many of the water-delivery networks are mini-grids where the of supply water is insufficient. In some places, running water is only available for a few short periods during the summer.
Kåre Hendriksen, project leader, talks about the project
Challenging geological conditions can make it difficult to transport water over long distances or to store water for use during the winter. This adds costs for local firms, particularly those in the water-intensive fish-processing industry. The primary goal of the project was to evaluate existing solutions and to work together to develop alternatives.
The project works with sustainable growth in small rural communities. Its goals are threefold:
– improve the circular food economy and increase the value of local food products
– produce an analysis of energy access and study ways to add value in areas where there is no stable access to sustainable energy where there is no stable access to sustainable energy
– develop a roadmap for circular food economy and value creation for food products from sparsely populated areas

Many of the coastal communities around the North Atlantic have trouble attracting people to work in the fishing industry. The shortage of workers is found throughout the industry, but the need is greatest amongst coastal fishing vessels less than 15 meters in length. b. Norway’s Trøndelag County completed a project that addressed this specific issue. The aim is to raise this issue in a North Atlantic context and look at possible collaborative solutions to the challenge.

A follow-on from the ALGET project, which used NORA funding to establish the network. The scope of the project is the establishment of common quality-assurance guidelines for seaweed products as they move from ocean to consumer. The project involves farmed and wild seaweed. A secondary focus is knowledge-exchange amongst the small enterprises that make up most of the operators in this newly established industry. This is the third and final grant.

This project uses site-specific environmental projects led by local young people to create an understanding of climate change and provide insight into the consequences it entails. As part of their involvement, participants monitor Arctic species. By doing so, they make a contribution to science, while at the same time participating in the development of educational material for schools and youth groups.
NORA funding in 2020: DKK 500,000
In many parts of the NORA area, public-transport planning is based on low-season ridership. The consequence is that, during the high season, there is often no room for residents on the buses, ships and helicopters that are primarily intended to serve their communities. This can lead to great frustration and contribute to out-migration. The project, which includes participants from the Faroe Islands, Norway and Iceland, seeks to develop innovative solutions that can meet the year-round needs of residents and the seasonal needs of visitors.
NORA funding in 2020: DKK 500,000
NORA has previously supported projects that have worked to develop geoparks – areas with distinct geologies that can be made into tourism attractions. Building on the experiences of these projects and a Nordic project dealing with food, the Geofood project will teach visitors about the fragility of the region’s ecosystems. Short films will be used to provide information about local cultural heritage and food culture. They will be promoted together with geoparks.
NORA funding in 2020: DKK 150,000
Alle beslutninger tages efter sagsbehandling og forhandlinger. I forhandlingerne bør konsensus princippet tilstræbes. Til vedtagelse af beslutninger af principiel karakter kræves, at ingen af delegationerne modsætter sig beslutningen.
